It skidded and hit a guardrail. While it was being repaired, I borrowed my father’s car—a large mint-blue Jeep. One day, while driving toward the Tama area, I passed through a town that felt strangely familiar. After a moment I realized why: I had been there once before, for my mother’s funeral. Almost without thinking, I turned the car around. I drove down a random street and found the convenience store I had stopped at that day. It was the first time I had come back since then. I took the Rolleiflex from the passenger seat and walked around for a while. The funeral home that had taken care of us seemed to be closed. In the housing complex next door, a Jimny—the same model as mine—was parked quietly.
